My long babbling introduction:
Today I’m going to share the results of an experiment I’ve been conducting for a few months now. Most hair products (shampoo, conditioner, mousse, etc) come in plastic. So, I began researching other options. I read about shampoo bars, using castile soap, and using baking soda and vinegar. I also read about wearing dreadlocks, but that is not the look for me.
Then, (hear the harp playing?) I read about not using anything! Maybe you think I mean the “no-poo” movement, which isn’t really no ‘poo because they are just using baking soda as the shampoo. Plus, I’m not a fan of the term “no poo” because even though my conscious mind knows what it means, the subconscious mind takes everything literally, and I prefer to be regular, if you know what I mean (that’s what hypnotherapy school will do to you – I analyze everything I say). If you don’t know what I mean – I’m saying I want daily poo, not no poo. Regular bowel movements, capiche? Well, whatever.
I decided not to use anything. Nothing, nada, zippo. I figured, if I could have great results not using anything, I’d much rather try that.
Here’s how it works:
I take a shower (yeah, I still do that) and wet my hair. I rub a dub dub my scalp with my fingertips just like a relaxing massage. Ohhhh yeahhhhh. Then I feel weird for a moment as I realize the routine of getting my hair all soapy and coconut-smelling isn’t what I do anymore. I blow dry my hair and – presto chango – I’m done!
And the results???
(this is my no shampoo & no makeup photo just for you! The plastic earrings – LOL! – were bought a long time ago. Check out the sparkles! – I love me some sparkles
At first, I didn’t know how well it was going to work. I still used some of my mousse and hair wax because I like thick, messy hair, and I thought that was the only way to get it. Eventually I realized I don’t need those products anymore. I dry my hair with my head upside down, tousle it with my fingers, and I’m set to go. In fact, my hair has more body than when I used products.
For several weeks it did feel a little different than usual. A little tacky. It wasn’t unpleasant at all, just not fly-away silky like after I use shampoo & conditioner. However, I used to add product to get the opposite of fly-away silkiness anyway. Before, I wouldn’t want to touch my hair very much because it wouldn’t be piece-y anymore. Without product, I can touch it as much as I want to and it still looks great. The funny thing is, apart from liking it myself, I get complimented on my hair everywhere I go. I always laugh as I tell my secret!
It’s been about two months, and my hair feels normal now after getting out of the shower (not tacky). It still has lots of body and is super easy to fix. I still love the look and have no plans of going back to shampoo.
Your results may differ! I think if I’d had long hair I might not have enjoyed the initial month of having a rougher texture. Also, if you want to keep using a lot of products, this may not be the solution for you. I think you need something to wash out the products, so baking soda/vinegar or shampoo bars may be a better option for you. I found that I don’t need any products when I don’t use shampoo/conditioner, so I don’t have to worry about that.
Here are some other solutions for not using shampoo & conditioner -
There are lots of other great reviews on shampoo/conditioner alternatives as well. Google it!
