Shaving with less plastic

My shaving routine has gone from nothing special to more of a luxury spa experience. I love how once again our no-new-plastic project has enhanced my quality of life! For years I’ve used the same Gillette Mach 3 Razor. Since I’ve had a full beard for many years and a goatee for about the last year, I have used a lot less of the disposable razor heads than the men who shave their whole face and neck. However, a few weeks ago my last Mach 3 razor head was on its last leg and I knew I couldn’t buy any more, because of [Continue Reading...]

No Shampoo, No Conditioner, No Products - OH MY!

My long babbling introduction: Today I’m going to share the results of an experiment I’ve been conducting for a few months now.  Most hair products (shampoo, conditioner, mousse, etc) come in plastic.  So, I began researching other options.  I read about shampoo bars, using castile soap, and using baking soda and vinegar.  I also read about wearing dreadlocks, but that is not the look for me. Then, (hear the harp playing?) I read about not using anything!  Maybe you think I mean the “no-poo” movement, which isn’t really no ‘poo because they are just using baking soda as the shampoo.  Plus, [Continue Reading...]

Consuming Less Stuff

First, I want to give a big shout out to Beth Terry (FakePlasticFish.com) and her post, Earth Day 2010: Buying Green vs. Being Green.  In it, she talks about a subject I have come to feel strongly about – that consuming more than we need is not good for the planet, whether the products are considered eco-friendly or not.  I know that being a consumer is linked with being patriotic in the U.S., but that seems like an outdated and unworkable mindset to me.  I don’t want to be called a consumer.  I’m so much more than what I buy. Kitty Cosmo's Steps Toward No New Plastic

While Mark and I have made some great, no-plastic changes in our lives, maintaining kitty Cosmo’s quality of life has presented a bit of a challenge.  We realized a few days ago that her food bag has a plastic lining.  We did some research at Beth Terry’s site, FakePlasticFish.com, and learned that canned cat food is lined with plastic, too!  We looked into making homemade cat food, but realized other obstacles with that … Sometimes drastic food changes can cause digestive upsets in cats Making nutritionally complete homemade food will take lots of extra time and research, not to mention [Continue Reading...]

A Kindred Spirit: Beth Terry, the fake plastic fish lady

Yesterday Melanie shared with me Beth Terry’s blog, FakePlasticFish.com. At first I thought, darn this was supposed to be our unique project, but then I realized, wait that’s awesome, someone else doing a great job to change her personal habits and raise awareness at the same time. I’ve barely gotten into her blog, but what I’ve seen so far about her life with less plastic has been educational and fun all at the same time. The video below is Beth’s entertaining report on her plastic consumption for 2009. She ended up using 96% less plastic last year than the average [Continue Reading...]
